Speckled trout — also called spotted sea trout — are one of the most dependable and family-friendly catches on Anna Maria Island. They school over the grass flats, eat readily, and put up a fun, flashy fight, which makes them a perfect target for first-timers and seasoned anglers alike. Speckled trout (Cynoscion nebulosus) are prized for their willingness to bite and their excellent table fare. They tend to school, so when you find one you often find many — great for keeping the whole boat busy. We follow all FWC slot and bag regulations so the fishery stays healthy.
When Is Speckled Trout Season on Anna Maria Island?
Speckled trout are a cool-season standout. They bite well from fall through spring — September through April is the prime stretch, with the flats getting thick with trout in late fall and the bite staying strong right through winter and into the spring transition. In the peak heat of summer they tend to scatter to deeper, cooler water and take a back seat to other species.
Where We Find Them
We target trout over shallow grass flats and around the sandy potholes within them, moving to slightly deeper holes and channels on cold winter days — all close to Holmes Beach and Anna Maria Island.
How We Target Them
A live shrimp under a popping cork is the classic, deadly trout setup, but they also love soft-plastic jigs worked over the grass and topwater plugs at first light. Our captains drift the flats to cover water and find the schools.
