King & Spanish Mackerel Fishing on Anna Maria Island

Grouper are the heavyweights of nearshore bottom fishing — they live tight to structure and try to rock you up the instant you hook them, so it's a strong-arm battle from the first crank. Off Anna Maria Island we target gag, red, and black grouper over the nearshore reefs, ledges, and hard bottom within an easy run of Holmes Beach.

Why Anglers Love Mackerel

Spanish and king mackerel are pure speed and aggression — they hit a bait at full throttle and put on a blistering run that's a blast on light tackle. Spanish are smaller and often right off the beach; kings run bigger and a little farther out. Both are a thrill for anglers of every level.

When Is Mackerel Season on Anna Maria Island?

Mackerel are a spring-and-fall story. Spanish mackerel start showing along the beaches and passes in March, with the spring run firing in April and May, and kingfish join them nearshore through the same window. Then in fall — October especially — the kings get thick nearshore again for one of the best runs of the year, with Spanish right there with them.

Where We Find Them

We find Spanish mackerel along the beaches, in the passes, and just off the nearshore reefs; kingfish a bit farther out over nearshore structure and bait pods — all off Anna Maria Island and Holmes Beach.

How We Target Them

Fast-moving baits are the trick. We troll or free-line live bait and cast flashy spoons and jigs for Spanish, and slow-troll live bait on stinger rigs for kings to handle their slashing strikes. A wire leader saves a lot of cutoffs against those teeth.

Inshore or Nearshore? It's the Captain's Call

On Anna Maria Island, what's biting and where can change day to day with season, tide, wind, and waves. We love putting you on the species you want to catch — but finding the fish and getting you bent comes first. Your captain reads the conditions each trip and makes the call on where to run and what to target, so you get the best possible day on the water. (This same approach applies across all our trips.
