Sheepshead Fishing on Anna Maria Island
Sheepshead are the striped, structure-loving bait-stealers that turn winter into one of the most productive seasons on Anna Maria Island. With human-like teeth built for crushing barnacles and crabs, they hold tight to docks, bridges, and rock piles — and they're famously good eating. AMI Charters targets them around the structure of Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, the passes, and southern Tampa Bay.
Why Anglers Love Sheepshead
Sheepshead (Archosargus probatocephalus) are prized for two reasons — they're a fun, scrappy fight around structure and they're excellent on the table. They're also a perfect cool-season target when other species slow down, and a great trip for families and anglers who want a cooler full of fish. We follow all FWC size and bag regulations.
When Is Sheepshead Season on Anna Maria Island?
Sheepshead are the headline of the cool-season bite. They begin returning to structure in November, and the action peaks in the dead of winter — December, January, and February are prime, with February often the single best month as the “sheepshead invasion” reaches its peak. They taper off in early spring as the water warms.
Where We Find Them
We find sheepshead tight to hard structure — docks, bridges, rock piles, piers, and the passes — around Anna Maria Island, Holmes Beach, and southern Tampa Bay.
How We Target Them
Fiddler crabs and live shrimp fished close to structure are the go-to. The challenge is their light, sneaky bite — sheepshead are notorious bait-stealers, so it takes a quick hook-set and a light touch. Our captains will dial you in.
Inshore or Nearshore? It's the Captain's Call
On Anna Maria Island, what's biting and where can change day to day with season, tide, wind, and waves. We love putting you on the species you want to catch — but finding the fish and getting you bent comes first. Your captain reads the conditions each trip and makes the call on where to run and what to target, so you get the best possible day on the water. (This same approach applies across all our trips.
