Snapper Fishing on Anna Maria Island

Snapper are a nearshore favorite — sharp-eyed, hard-pulling, and some of the best eating in the Gulf. Mangrove (gray) snapper are the mainstay off Anna Maria Island, turning on over the nearshore reefs and structure through the summer. AMI Charters targets them over the hard bottom within reach of Holmes Beach.

Why Anglers Love Snapper

Mangrove snapper (Lutjanus griseus) — and the other snappers that share the same structure — are wary, line-shy fish that reward a good presentation with a hard, head-shaking fight and a fantastic meal. We follow all FWC and federal size, bag, and seasonal regulations.

When Is Snapper Season on Anna Maria Island?

Snapper fishing is best in the warm months. Mangrove snapper turn on nearshore beginning in late spring and bite hard through the summer — June through August is the heart of the run — before tapering as the water cools. Some snapper species have specific federal seasons, so your captain will know what's open on your trip.

Where We Find Them

We target snapper over nearshore reefs, ledges, rock piles, and hard bottom off Anna Maria Island, all within an easy run of Holmes Beach.

How We Target Them

A live or cut bait on a light leader and a knocker rig is the classic approach — snapper are leader-shy, so we scale down to get bit. Chumming to bring the school up and fire them up can turn a slow drop into fast action.

Inshore or Nearshore? It's the Captain's Call

On Anna Maria Island, what's biting and where can change day to day with season, tide, wind, and waves. We love putting you on the species you want to catch — but finding the fish and getting you bent comes first. Your captain reads the conditions each trip and makes the call on where to run and what to target, so you get the best possible day on the water. (This same approach applies across all our trips.)
