Hogfish Fishing on Anna Maria Island

Hogfish — also called hog snapper — are one of the most prized reef fish in the Gulf, as striking to look at as they are delicious. They use their long, pig-like snout to root crustaceans off the bottom, and they hold over the nearshore reefs and hard bottom off Anna Maria Island. Many anglers rank hogfish right at the top of the list for eating.

Why Anglers Love Hogfish

Hogfish (Lachnolaimus maximus) are a reef-fishing prize — wary, structure-oriented, and widely considered some of the finest table fare in Florida waters. Landing one is always a highlight of a nearshore trip. We follow all FWC size, bag, and seasonal regulations, which set specific harvest seasons for hogfish on the Gulf side.

When Do We Catch Hogfish on Anna Maria Island?

Hogfish are a nearshore, warm-water reef target we pick up over hard bottom and structure, often while bottom fishing for other reef species. Gulf harvest seasons are set by FWC, so your captain will know what's open on your trip. As with all our nearshore fishing, exactly when and where we target them is a captain's call based on conditions.

Where We Find Them

We find hogfish over nearshore reefs, ledges, and hard bottom off Anna Maria Island, within an easy run of Holmes Beach.

How We Target Them

Hogfish key on crustaceans, so live shrimp on a light, simple bottom rig is the classic approach — they're not aggressive bait-chasers, so a natural presentation right on the bottom is key. A light leader and a sharp, smaller hook get more bites.

Inshore or Nearshore? It's the Captain's Call

On Anna Maria Island, what's biting and where can change day to day with season, tide, wind, and waves. We love putting you on the species you want to catch — but finding the fish and getting you bent comes first. Your captain reads the conditions each trip and makes the call on where to run and what to target, so you get the best possible day on the water. (This same approach applies across all our trips.
