Snook Fishing on Anna Maria Island

Snook are the crown jewel of inshore fishing on Anna Maria Island — explosive, hard-pulling, and famously tricky to fool. When a big snook crushes a bait under the mangroves or in a pass and tears off toward cover, you'll understand why anglers chase them their whole lives. AMI Charters targets snook around Anna Maria, Holmes Beach, the passes, and the southern reaches of Tampa Bay, and our captains know where they stage with the season and tide.

Why Anglers Love Snook

​

Snook (Centropomus undecimalis) are one of Florida's most prized inshore gamefish — ambush predators that hammer a bait and fight with sudden, powerful runs back toward structure. They're also a carefully managed, conservation-minded fishery: we follow all FWC size, bag, and seasonal regulations, and many of our snook trips — especially during the summer spawn — are catch-and-release.

When Is Snook Season on Anna Maria Island?

​

Snook fish well from spring through early fall. As the water warms in spring (March–April) they move out of their winter backwaters and feed aggressively. Through summer (May–August) they stack up around the passes and beaches to spawn — outstanding catch-and-release action. Early fall (September–October) brings another strong bite before they retreat to warmer water for winter. Snook are cold-sensitive, so the dead of winter is the slowest stretch for them.

Where We Find Them

​

We target snook along mangrove shorelines, around dock lights, in the passes such as Longboat Pass, and along the beaches during the summer spawn — all within easy reach of Holmes Beach and Anna Maria Island.

How We Target Them

​

Live bait — pilchards and other whitebait — is tough to beat, but snook will also crush artificials and flies. Our captains free-line baits along the mangroves, work them under floats near structure, and sight-fish the beaches when conditions allow. Our docklight night trips are a fun, productive way to target summer snook after dark.
