​Gag, red, and black grouper are powerful, structure-oriented predators and some of the best eating in the Gulf. Hooking one near the bottom and turning its head before it reaches its hole is one of the most satisfying fights out there. Grouper are tightly managed — we follow all FWC and federal size, bag, and seasonal regulations, and harvest seasons for gag and other groupers open and close through the year

When Is Grouper Season on Anna Maria Island?

Grouper bite nearshore through the warmer months and into fall. They're a fun summer target (July–August), and the bite is strongest in fall — September through November is prime for gag grouper over the nearshore structure. Open harvest seasons vary by species and are set by FWC and federal regulators, so your captain will know what's in season on your trip.

We fish nearshore reefs, ledges, rock piles, and hard bottom off Anna Maria Island — the kind of structure that holds grouper within an easy run of Holmes Beach.

How We Target Them
​
Live and cut bait dropped to the bottom on a knocker or fish-finder rig is the go-to. The key is stout tackle and a strong drag to pull a hooked grouper up and away from the structure before it can break you off — our captains will coach you through it.
